I believe I've mentioned it previously, but (in spite of my grinch-like demeanor and my consistent crash-and-burn experiences in the ways of love) I really do enjoy the romantic comedy genre. Keeping that in mind however, I think that it's safe to say that most aspects of the genre are pretty predictable. For the most part, it comes down to the chemistry between the leads and how sparkling the dialogue is. For me, there's one other criteria to judge the quality of a romantic comedy, and that's how miserable it makes me feel after having watched the film. Perhaps that's a bit masochistic, but nonetheless, it's the standard that I use. I'm happy to say that 'Must Love Dogs' left me feeling pretty miserable. True, it was no 'While You Were Sleeping' (for me, the pinacle of misery-inducing movies ...which is to say movies that I think are very good, but left me feeling quite miserable). Both Lane and Cusack are good in whatever films they're in, and this is no exception. Nothing to rush right out and see, but if you're a fan of the genre, by all means take a look at this one.
